GFLC Day Two WrapUp

Day two at the Global Financial Leadership Conference featured leading voices in business, politics and media addressing the the roles of media in the new political environment, how to move forward on climate change and the success stories behind some iconic global businesses. The day was capped with a discussion between CME Group Chairman and CEO Terry Duffy and Michael Bloomberg.  See some of the day’s other highlights:

Former GE head Jeff Immelt discussed the changes he engineered in his 16-year tenure as the CEO of GE.

Former UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon discussed the focus business and political leaders must have in addressing climate change.

CNBC’s Ron Insana led a panel featuring Societe Generale Chairman Lorenzo Bini Smaghi,  Virtu Financial founder Vincent Viola and  Milliman Financial’s Adam Schenk. They discussed the outlook for markets and where opportunities might lie in the next year.

CNN contributor and former Barack Obama Senior Adviser David Axelrod brought his perspective on the state of American politics, focusing on the media’s relationship with the Trump administration. “What we can’t lose is fundamental faith in our democratic institutions themselves,” he said.

A panel of influential journalists gathered to discuss the role of media in today’s political environment. Joe Scarborough led a group that included The Guardian’s Jill Abramson, Fox News’ Brit Hume and Buzzfeed’s Craig Silverman. “This environment with a vast array of sources available, is a challenge to the reader or viewer at home,” said Hume.

Vanguard Group founder Jack Bogle and Dimensional Fund Advisors co-founder Mac McQuown were honored with the Melamed-Arditti Award for Innovation for revolutionizing investment strategy by pioneering index funds. “There’s no point in betting. Own the market. Hold it. Keep the cost down, and don’t peek,”  said Bogle.

Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Group, made his second appearance at GFLC discussing his life and career.
