A Conversation with Michael Moskow

Several issues impacting financial markets right now got us thinking about a conversation we had with former Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago president Michael Moskow recently.

The United States is slowly climbing out of recession, the Presidential race is forcing a discussion about the best strategy for growth, the Eurozone is at a pivotal moment in its history, and there’s volatility in commodity markets. We sat down with Moskow a few months ago, where he shared with us his perspective on each of these issues. His analysis for U.S. growth is proving to be especially on target:

“When you have a recession caused by a financial crisis, it’s longer, it’s deeper, and the recovery is slower and more sluggish.”

Moskow brings a unique perspective. In addition to serving on the Federal Open Market Committee while at the Federal Reserve, he has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate for five positions in the federal government, including Deputy U.S. Trade Representative.   He’s also taught business and economics at several universities, including Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management, and currently serves as vice chairman at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs.
